What is Refrigerant Recharging?

Refrigerant is the chemical that makes air conditioning work — it absorbs heat from your indoor air and releases it outside. A properly charged system contains exactly the right amount of refrigerant for its design. If the system is low on refrigerant, it is because there is a leak somewhere — refrigerant does not get consumed or evaporate on its own.

Low refrigerant may indicate a leak or another system issue. An on-site diagnosis identifies the cause before any proposed repair or recharge is quoted; simply topping off refrigerant without addressing a leak may not solve the problem. Air Zone Plus charges $125 for on-site repair diagnosis for nonmembers. The fee is separate from repair work and is not credited or waived because a repair is approved. Ask the team to confirm any applicable membership benefit under your current agreement.

We are EPA Section 608 certified for refrigerant handling. We service R-410A systems and can still service older R-22 systems using recovered and reclaimed refrigerant. For R-22 systems showing significant refrigerant loss, we provide honest guidance on whether continued service or full system replacement is the better long-term decision.

Warning Signs to Watch For

Warm Air Despite Running

If your AC runs continuously but the air from vents is warm or room temperature, low refrigerant from a leak is one of the most common causes.

Ice on the Line Set

Ice forming on your copper refrigerant lines or indoor coil is a clear indicator of critically low refrigerant charge.

Hissing Sound Near Equipment

A hissing sound from your indoor unit, outdoor condenser, or copper lines often indicates an active refrigerant leak.

Rising Bills, Less Cooling

A slow refrigerant leak reduces efficiency gradually. Your system works harder and costs more while delivering less cooling than it should.

How We Handle It

1. System Pressure Test

We check system pressures to confirm refrigerant loss and assess charge level before any other work.

2. Leak Detection

We use electronic leak detectors to locate the exact source of the refrigerant loss — coil, line set, valve, or connection.

3. Leak Repair

We repair the leak source completely. No refrigerant is added until the repair is confirmed and the system holds pressure.

4. Recharge to Specification

We recharge to the manufacturer's exact specification using superheat and subcooling measurements — not pressure guesses.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my AC is low on refrigerant?

Signs include warm air from vents, ice on the line set, a hissing sound from equipment, and energy bills that keep climbing while cooling gets worse.

Can you still service R-22 systems?

Yes. We can service R-22 systems with recovered and reclaimed refrigerant. However, R-22 is no longer produced and is expensive. We will advise you on repair vs. replacement honestly.

Is it legal to add refrigerant myself?

No. Federal law requires EPA Section 608 certification to purchase and handle refrigerants. Air Zone Plus technicians are fully certified.

Do you offer financing?

Yes — ask about financing options during your free estimate. We work with homeowners and businesses to find payment plans that fit their budget.

Are your technicians licensed?

Yes. All Air Zone Plus technicians are fully licensed, insured, and experienced across all major HVAC brands. License: TACLA 119805R.
