How Often Should You Change Your HVAC Air Filter in Houston?

The standard advice is every 90 days — but in Houston, that's often not enough.

Filter change frequency by household type:

  • Single person, no pets, no allergies: every 90 days
  • Average household, 1–2 occupants: every 60 days
  • Household with one pet: every 45–60 days
  • Household with multiple pets or allergy sufferers: every 30 days
  • During peak cooling season in Houston (May–September): add 2 weeks to any schedule above

Filter type matters too:

  • 1-inch fiberglass filters: replace every 30 days — they're cheap and disposable
  • 1-inch pleated filters: every 30–60 days
  • 4–5 inch media filters: every 6–12 months (but check them quarterly)
  • HEPA and high-MERV filters: check monthly, replace per manufacturer guidance

A clogged filter is the #1 cause of restricted airflow, which leads to frozen evaporator coils, system strain, and compressor failure. It's the cheapest maintenance item you can control.

If you're unsure what filter your system takes or how to access it, call Air Zone Plus at (346) 676-8752 — we'll walk you through it.
