Houston HVAC Tips • February 28, 2026 • By Air Zone Plus LLC Team
Houston sits at an average outdoor relative humidity of 75–90% for most of the year. Your HVAC system is supposed to handle that — but several conditions cause it to fail at dehumidification even while cooling normally.
1. Oversized AC system — A unit that's too large for your home short-cycles (turns off before completing a full run). Dehumidification only happens during the cooling cycle — short cycles don't allow enough run time to pull moisture from the air.
2. Leaky ductwork — If your duct system has gaps or disconnections in unconditioned spaces (attic, crawl space), humid outside air gets pulled into the supply stream constantly.
3. Poor building envelope — Air leaks around windows, doors, recessed lighting, and electrical outlets allow outdoor humidity to infiltrate continuously.
4. Low refrigerant — A system low on refrigerant runs longer without reaching setpoint, which can actually improve dehumidification in the short term — but it's damaging your compressor.
5. Single-stage vs. variable-speed equipment — Single-stage systems run at 100% capacity or off. Variable-speed systems can run at 40–60% capacity for extended periods, removing significantly more moisture from the air.
