AC Not Cooling? Here's What the Problem Likely Is
When your AC is running but not cooling, the cause is almost always one of these:
Check these yourself first:
- Thermostat set to COOL, not FAN — Fan-only mode circulates air without cooling it
- Dirty air filter — A severely clogged filter can kill cooling capacity almost completely
- Tripped circuit breaker — Reset the breaker for the outdoor unit and check if it trips again
Likely needs a technician:
- Low refrigerant — If the system has a refrigerant leak, it will gradually lose cooling capacity. Only a licensed tech can add refrigerant.
- Frozen evaporator coil — Turn the system to fan-only for 2–3 hours to thaw, then call for service
- Failed capacitor — Capacitors are inexpensive but require a tech to diagnose and replace safely
- Dirty condenser coil — The outdoor unit needs to be able to reject heat. A clogged coil means it can't.
- Failed compressor — This is the expensive one. If the compressor is gone, the repair cost often approaches replacement cost.
